Fruit rootstocks

Apple seedlings

... like Malus communis and Malus communis 'Bittenfelder' and Malus communis 'Grahams Jubiläumsapfel' are strongly-growing, stable and resistant. These rootstocks are particularly suitable for semi-dwarf and standard trees. Grafted trees bear fruit later but very heavily.

In addition to the generatively propagated rootstocks, there are numerous vegetative rootstocks, like e.g.:

  • Malus M 11
strong growth, stable, for semi-dwarf and standard trees
  • Malus M 4
strong growth, early fruiting, heavy yield, for weak and medium growth scions and espalier fruit
  • Malus M 7
medium strong growth, particularly suitable for heavy soils, for weak and medium growth scions and espalier fruit
  • Malus MM 106
weak growth but stable, suitable for most soils, medium early fruiting, for small to medium tree forms
  • Malus M 26
weak growth but stable, good fruiting, for small tree forms
  • Malus M 9
weak growth, not very stable, early fruiting, for good soil, for small-crowned trees
  • Malus M 27
very weak growth, cultivated varieties grow scarcely over 1.5 m, for small apple bushes and growing in pots

Pear seedlings

  • • ... like Pyrus communis,Pyrus communis 'Bartlett' and Pyrus communis 'Kirchensaller Mostbirne'
are strongly growing rootstocks with good stability and resistance for semi-dwarf and standard trees and espaliers. Pyrus com. 'Pyrodwarf'-S- is a commonly grafted weak-growing rootstock well suited for commercial fruit growing

Cherry seedlings

  • • ... for sweet cherries are e.g. Prunus avium, Prunus avium 'Alkavo', Prunus avium 'Altenweddingen'.
These rootstocks are very strongly growing and thus suitable for semi-dwarf and standard trees. For sour cherries, Prunus mahaleb is mostly used as a rootstock. Good for very light locations.
  • Prunus cerasifera/myrobolana
is a very strongly growing rootstock for plums and damsons on light soils, very stable.
  • Prunus St Julien 'INRA 2'
is also strongly growing, but demands better soil.
